Andrew confronted Arlen at the front door to their farmhouse. Leil stood before him, facing Arlen, and her face was glad in a way Andrew had never seen. He reached for her, but before he could touch her, she turned quickly to him, and a horrific pain stabbed through his gut. He fell to his knees.

Leil!” said Andrew, his voice choked. “What are you doing?”

Her eyes looked softly, adoringly, even obediently, up at Arlen. In her hand, a jector dripped Andrew‘s blood.

Leil, fight him,” Andrew gasped, not believing what he saw.

“Goodbye, Andrew,” she said, her voice breathless with excitement. She turned and embraced Arlen; they twined in a passionate kiss, and Andrew heard her say, “How long will it take?”

“No more than a minute.” Arlen‘s voice began to fade. “Then you’ll have him as a servant, and me as your… partner.”

Andrew‘s head sagged as he tried to stay on hands and knees. Arlen had drugged her, he knew. The curtain descended on his thoughts, and inside his head he cried out in fear and fury, but no one was near him to hear any sound.
