takeout line: any of the evacuation and recycling tubes used in the one-person SVS repair ships to take waste from the pilot, monitor its contents, and return it to the microfarms for reuse.

Taklimakan: the vacant desert of Western China in Xinjiang.

talaam: greeting among Hejji, used sarcastically with others.

Talizirin: the City chief minister, head of the City‘s Governing Council, and responsible for decisions on matters requiring combined military and civil authority.

Talu Tribin: Talu, Talu Tribin: n., an ainon who frequently assists, and partners with, Ferdinand in the Archives.

Tamarr: the mother of Tomas.

tambo: tambo, tambos: a generic term for any hand-held percussion instrument.

tanglewire: a remote cousin to concertina wire, serving the same purpose: keeping people from crossing it. Tanglewire carries tiny coiled barbs like those found in nematocysts; when touched, they shoot out to hook themselves in skin and fabric. The barbs are sometimes capsuled with toxins.

tank: tank, tanks: a drinking-vessel, much like a tankard but shaped like a hexagonal prism. Made generally of translucent glass/metal alloy. Tanks lack handles, having instead a socket at one vertical edge into which the drinker plugs his or her personal handle.

tankroom: a chamber housing one or more viewtanks for 3-D visualization. The SVS used such chambers profusely, and had each room connected by fiberoptics to a vast battery of observatories and computer systems.

Tanmar Fest: a City street festival celebrating the shared coll anniversary, at which all the colls declared their unity and familyhood. A channel for release from controlled behavior, wilder than any of the other fests including Corsang Run.

Tannerye: a corpo officer.

Taranese: a pre-Colonist language of Tarnus known to Jono.

Tarbruk: a small, mostly-surface city southeast of the Transellas mines and a long way southeast of Deen‘s and Marra‘s farm. A large contingent of Darko Hejj families was relocated out of Tarbruk to the northern wastes, for no apparent reason other than their voiced dissent concerning the Transellas mine safety investigations.

tardigrade: tardigrade, tardigrades: a tiny creature capable of sustaining life under a wide variety of extreme conditions. Tardigrades are studied actively and the work has yielded many products and insights of great use in starship cryosleep research.

Tardikon: a war gas, lethal to humans but not to andros.

Taree: a child caught in the fighting at the Aswar Nagrasai crossing.

Tariall: Arlen‘s servant and Indrio‘s lover, caught with Indrio by Arlen and severely punished.

Tarjeli: Tarjeli, Tarjeli’s: owner of an herbal shop at Aswal Narr.

Tarnus: name for the world in which the story takes place. See World, The.

tarona: a coll name for the longrunner vine.

tarquat: fruit, Marra and Deen grow and sell it, at a high price. An extract from its seeds can be used as a catalyst in the manufacture of KPX.

Tarquin: the mutated innerspace construct who introduces Andrew to the world of headsmith changes.

Tatsuo Minamata: Minamata, Tatsuo Minamata: researcher in the Sinese SVS group.

tattershit: term of contempt for those who dangle at someone’s behind.

Tauro: Andrew and Leil‘s fourth child (after Martela ), second son and twin to Tuanu (in an alternate reality created briefly by Andrew near the end of his rise to power).

Tavenal Tain: Tain, Tavenal Tain: a halfdroid street jitar player on Teshill Slope, with many connections in the City.

Such organs usually offer the wearer awareness of normally-unperceived ranges of chemical, kinesthetic and radiation sensitivity. Usually ephemeral.

tempweave: a cheap type of semi-synthetic cloth used for all kinds of cleanup, padding and workwear.

Tenn Carmo: Carmo, Tenn Carmo: a woman officer of the insurgency.

tensility: a measure of tissue strength and tone.

Teron: Ezzar Astina Turianoch Teron Arcus Harridium

terpene: terpene, terpenes, terps: aromatic organic chemicals with the generic formula (C5H8)n.

Terre-Lune Administration: the space-governance body responsible for control of the space between Earth and the Moon, including the L4 and L5 points at lunar orbit. The Western counterpart to Hau Ren in this respect – its impotence and its practiced self-importance in the face of widespread disrespect are reflected in the snickers produced by the use of its acronym, TLA, which also stands for Three-Letter Acronym.

Terrisana: female partner of Alliji Harren.

terziard: terziard, terziards: surviving artifacts of an earlier aeon of the universe’s existence, these are dimensional transition points, or ‘hyperknots’ in the above-12-dimensional continuum.

Teshill Slope (the place): a busy sector of one of the rising Turnings that traverses Sobi Zone. Teshill Slope is noted for its intensity of illegal commerce and general thievery.

Tintirella: the name of Parthren‘s canizard.

tissuemaker: tissuemaker, tissuemakers: a class of cellular constructors used to rebuild damaged and missing tissue of many types. They come in squeezable tubes in a paste form, ready to be applied. Each type requires a different amount of time to regenerate a given area or volume from a few keying cells of the tissue type needed; harder, denser tissues take days, but softer ones only minutes.

Titania: one of the five major moons of Uranus. Of the five it is the second farthest from the planet, and is the most massive and largest.

Tiurin: a country farmer, living not far from Marra and Deen.

tivo: streetchild language for ‘you want’.

toolsnakes: long, flexible metal tools having sufficient intelligence to let an operator send them into small orifices to perform wrench or screwdriver jobs, or retrieve small objects in such places.

top barker: top barker, top barkers: slang term for a leader of two squads of four and their two leaders.

topo: a three-dimensional topographic display of City space, shown as if the rock is transparent.

Torre: the commander of the City insurrection forces, leading all four colls and their head officers.

toughcloth: a class of fabrics having some of the penetration resistance of thin layers of cloth armor.

Toughskin: one of Ellichik‘s many impromptu nicknames, this one referring to Ezzar‘s penchant for extra-durable outerwear.

tox: tox, toxes: short for ‘toxin’, the term used here to mean any purposefully created and delivered poison. Most street toxins have immediate paralytic effects, and follow them with different forms of slow death: suffocation, muscle rigor, system-wide hemorrhage, tissue lysis. In slang usage, refers to recreational drugs used to excess or near-excess.

toxdumps: landfills containing illegal contaminants such as radioactives, toxic metals, mutation factors, biohazards, and the like.

toxgas: a poisonous, bad-smelling, highly-visible vapor used in some street situations to repel unwanted close physical approaches.

toxgun: toxgun, toxguns: a stubby-barrelled gun used to deliver tox in the face of an adversary, with sufficient force to penetrate heavy cloth and skin.

tracerecord: every entryway and lift in secure buildings and facilities has an automated permanent archive that records every passage.

trancetune: trancetune, trancetunes: a hypnotic melody (see also hypnobeat) often used as a calming influence during times of stress.

Tranqmils: tranquilizer capsules produced by the starship pharm engines after arrival.

Transellas: a huge mining complex far to the southwest of the City and just northwest of Tarbruk. Transellas is known for its lethal working conditions. Transellas includes Signo 808, Signo 4, and Signo 2331, the three most productive sources of super-heavy metals on Tarnus. These three excavations are usually meant collectively when miners talk about Transellas in general. Few people, andros, or humans, talk at all about Signo 945 or Signo 943 at Transellas, which adjoin Presigno 7.

transfect: a creature with blended genome, genes taken from two or more different species of other creatures.

transmutations: a cosmic ray made up of a single heavy atomic nucleus acts like a nuclear ‘bullet’ when its strikes another atomic nucleus. In effect, the particles in the two nuclei interact, producing either a large single nucleus and some small fragments or else two or more intermediate-sized nuclei. In either case, the atoms emerging from the strike are not the same as those entering it – two atomic elements have been converted to others. This process is called transmutation. It can turn a metal such as iron into another element altogether, so that under continuous bombardment by cosmic rays, a structure made of steel can be weakened by such changes. This phenomenon is familiar to anyone working in a nuclear power plant.

Treadmire: a street in Sobi Zone.

Treeminar: one of the many body plans for the vanished humans of the pre-Colonist era. The Treeminar were tiny beings who stood about the height of a thumb, short-lived. Their reckless speed of life was characterized by their constant flitting about on hovers powered electostatically.

trehalose: a disaccharide that can serve as a drying agent (desiccant) and preservative, storing water safely during periods of severe conditions. The tardigrades use a conversion process that turns glucose, a sugar, into trehalose when needed, and then reconverts the trehalose back to glucose when activity may be resumed.

treiach: one of the three elected male leaders of the Darko Hejj military arm for a given City zone.

Tren Tarz: Tarz, Tren Tarz: the regional militia overlord.

Trenzil: a living machine Arlen reclaimed from one of the deeper, uninhabited levels of the City. Several of these exist; they are used to paralyze unwanted visitors, send messages, and stand watch. They speak a Second Dynasty dialect of Old Russoba.

trevish: Trevish‘el nai’aerel…" Trenzil is starting to ask Arlen whether it can incapacitate the two government visitors.

Trezardin: a neurocomposer of the twenty-eighth century of ancient Earth, who left a legacy of musicospiritual works that were relived by awed participants for over five thousand years.

Triesh: Triesh Adrili, Leil‘s father, of Astrax Terxil Coll.

trifaceted: some of the shields used against beam weapons are keyed to optical frequencies, having the cube-corner reflecting mirrors that send the light beam back along its incoming path, resulting in backblast. These cube corners are the trifaceted elements of the shield. More advanced shields use phase-conjugate mirroring.

triffel: a grain crop used to create liquors with a distinctive herb-sweet aroma and a load of mild psychoactive drugs.

trifork: describes the three-pronged tongue of the canizard.

trigems: trigeminal nerves, meeting on the cheekbone.

Trin: a street teenager in Toronto.

Trinculo: a typical name used by a constructed innerspace entity, taking humanoid form, which communicates with an andro during one of the andro‘s viral upgrades.

triperex: triperex, triperixanthon: addictive drug like decatrophinyl.

TriSpan: a Hau Ren brand name.

Trojan One: the asteroid 617 Patroclus, one of the largest of the Trojan asteroids of Jupiter, librating around the L5 Lagrange point behind Jupiter in its orbital path.

troping: reaching toward a source of attraction.

Turiosten: Turhiosthanh, Turhnushthenh, Turiosten, Turiosthenh: an alien, a Zashinhalh, discovered and imprisoned by Arlen.

turkil: turkil, turkili: a diminutive rodent, much like a cross between a mouse and a chipmunk, inhabiting the deep grasses of the plains.

Turnfire: Turnfire, Turnfire Way: an understreet in Naga Zone

Turning: Turning, Turnings: any one of the major graded streets of the City, spiraling inward from the City‘s edge and sloping either upward or downward until it meets other Turnings at the City‘s axis, at a level far above or below its beginning. These were the principal ways by which the City‘s earlier inhabitants had evidently moved from level to level; but the Colonists wasted no time in sinking shafts for elevators and stairs wherever they wanted them. To visualize one of the Turnings, think of a spiral clock spring, held in a horizontal orientation. Now press down on the center of the spiral to see the form one of the Turnings will take. Teshill Slope is a part of one of the major Turnings that passes through Sobi Zone.
